Catalogue standards and real installed dimensions are not always the same — especially in older UAE facilities where inspection windows were fitted by different contractors over different construction phases, each working to slightly different standards.

Understanding TML Inspection Windows
A TML — Thickness Measurement Location – inspection window is a pre-installed fitting in the insulation of a pipeline at a designated inspection point. Its purpose is to provide consistent, repeatable access to the same point on the pipe surface across multiple inspection cycles.
The window consists of an outer fitting – typically a short cylindrical collar welded or bonded into the insulation cladding — into which the inspection plug is inserted and secured. The plug seals the window between inspections and is removed when NDT access is needed.
The key dimensions of a TML window that determine plug sizing are:
- Inner diameter of the window fitting – this is the opening the plug body must fit into
- Insulation thickness – this determines the required plug depth from the outer cladding face to the pipe surface
- Cladding thickness – affects the flange seating and how the plug sits at the outer face
- Thread type and pitch – where the window fitting uses a threaded retention system, the thread specification must match the plug exactly
Each of these needs to be confirmed from the actual installation, not assumed from a project drawing that may be years old and may not reflect as-built conditions.
How to Measure an Existing TML Window
For facilities that already have inspection windows installed and need replacement or additional plugs, the measurement process is straightforward with the right approach.
Step 1 – Measure the inner diameter of the window fitting. Use a calibrated calliper to measure the bore of the window collar from the inside. Take measurements at multiple points around the circumference – older fittings can be slightly out of round — and use the average. This is the critical dimension: the plug OD must match this bore to within the tolerance specified for the plug type.
Step 2 – Measure the insulation thickness. With the plug removed, measure the depth from the outer face of the cladding to the pipe surface. This determines the required plug length. A plug that is too short will not bring the O-ring to the sealing face of the window fitting. A plug that is too long will bottom out on the pipe before the O-ring reaches the sealing point.
Step 3 – Check the thread specification. If the window fitting uses a threaded retention system, photograph or record the thread and confirm the pitch and form before ordering. Standard thread forms used in UAE industrial window fittings include BSP and NPT, but non-standard or proprietary threads exist in older installations.
Step 4 – Confirm the flange requirement. The flange at the outer face of the plug should sit flush against the cladding surface without interference. Record the cladding material and thickness so the flange OD and seating can be confirmed as compatible.
Step 5 – Note the operating conditions. Temperature range, process fluid, and environmental exposure all feed into the plug material specification — silicone, EPDM, or cryogenic — and the insert material — aluminium or stainless steel. Sizing and material specification go together.
